Adolescent Health Initiative
This initiative began in 1988 through funding from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Maternal and Child Health. RESA 1 sought the funding through the competitive grant process and has been the recipient of the funding for Region 1 since 1988. The funding established a workforce of eight, Adolescent Health Initiative Coordinators that seek to collaborate locally and support or develop initiatives that equip youth with the developmental assets that they need to thrive and become successful.
All the Coordinators are charged with promoting Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets. Because the needs of each region are different, building "assets" does not look the same across the state but has the same positive impact of helping youth thrive, resist bad behaviors, and become resilient. The Region 1 Coordinator works directly with youth to build "assets" (ex: Bullying Awareness workshops, Zumba® classes, Read Aloud), collaborates with existing initiatives that build "assets" (ex: Summers County Substance Abuse Partnership, Monroe County Teaming for Learning, Mercer County Expanded School Based Mental Health Task Force), and/or supports and develops new initiatives (professional development courses for educators and parents, Girls on the Run for Wyoming County, YMCA of Southern WV Get Up, Get Active Youth Movement, Raleigh County Schools Bullying Policy Committee).
